Dental Care FAQs

From the moment we can talk, we begin to ask questions. And every answer is just followed by yet another question. As we grow older, does anything really change? Questions are still asked and answers should always be given. It seems to be though that adults are more afraid to ask questions – perhaps because they are too scared to look as though they don’t know the answer themselves. When it comes to the caring of our teeth, only dentists will know a lot, and even they will ask questions.

Here are some common questions that people ask about dental care

ask your family dentist

What is Gingivitis?

Often people are told by their family dentist to practice good dental hygiene to prevent Gingivitis, but do the patients know what that is exactly or are they just trusting their dentist’s advice? Gingivitis is a condition that affects the gums – causing them to become irritated, inflamed and often they bleed as a result. It is caused by bacteria that surrounds the teeth and enters the gums. The main way then to avoid getting Gingivitis is by practising a good oral hygiene routine. Brushing and flossing your teeth daily and doing it the correct way will keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What Happens at the First Dentist Appointment?

The first step to getting and maintaining a healthy smile is making sure you take good care of your teeth at home and that you are going to the dentist regularly. Many people don’t make it past the first step. It is human nature to fear the unknown – whether the unknown is a blind date or a new dentist or oral hygienist appointment. Knowing what to expect can take a huge weight off the stress that a patient might feel before that first appointment. After all the paperwork has been done, the dentist will most probably ask you what your goals are for your teeth and what concerns or questions you may have. An overall examination, often using X-rays, will be conducted and the condition of your teeth and gums will be assessed. The dentist will keep you in the loop at all times and make sure that you are comfortable with everything he or she is doing.

What About Dental Emergencies?

Dental emergencies are always unplanned for and more than often they occur at inconvenient times. The first thing to remember when faced with an emergency is that it is always best to see the dentist as soon as possible. Give the Dental Offices a call and see if they can make an opening for you, and if that doesn’t work most dentists will have an emergency contact number. If so, all patients should have it in case of an emergency.

There are many more questions that are frequently asked by many. If you have more questions that you would like answered, don’t be afraid to call your dentist’s offices or perhaps schedule an appointment so that you can talk to him personally. Dentists are there to serve you and your teeth, they will always have your best interests at heart.
